About a year ago, I read a book called Hyperfocus by Chris Bailey. This was my first introduction to attention in the world of self-improvement.

It was also the first place that I learned that my attention span can be increased, and quite easily, I might add. In his book, he offered a simple practice that has been shown to increase our attention span, attentional awareness, as well as our focus ability.

And like an absolute lunkhead, I said “That’s cool!” and never did anything about it.

A remarkably common problem in my life.

But no more.

In this newsletter, I’m going to break down the different practices that have been shown to increase one’s attention span, lower distractions, and increase focus. Not only that, I’m going to lay out how I plan on adding this into my life, unlike last time.

Working Memory

First of all, we need to understand that our attention abilities are grounded in something called “Working Memory.”

Think of working memory as a whiteboard, and your focus is like a flashlight. Your brain scribbles out thoughts, ideas, or whatever happens to be floating by on the whiteboard as you shine your focus on it.
