There are a lot of things I really like about life. Here are a few.
It’s an infinite game.
It has rules, but we all play inside those rules differently.
It’s rarely in absolutes, more often we live out of a spectrum.
The last one is perhaps my favorite. We may agree that social media can be unhealthy, but for me, that might mean something different than for you. The point isn’t to find the person with the perfect answer, it’s to surround yourself with people who help you explore what is the correct balance for you.
So why name this newsletter The Undistracted Life?
Well, here’s what it means to me.
First of all, to get distracted by something presupposes that you are already moving towards something specific. Otherwise, you’re not getting distracted, you’re just living a short-sighted life. By definition, you get distracted “from” something. You’re on the path, then the distraction pulls you off. I like that.
So for me, the first and most important part of living The Undistracted Life, means I have something I care about, that I don’t want to get distracted from. I have something specific that I’m aiming at. Maybe it’s nailing the next focus session, maybe it’s building healthy relationships, maybe it’s building a business. No matter what it is, there’s intentionality. You’re aiming at something.
Second of all, for me, it means finding new and innovative ways to move towards the goal. This is probably the side that most people are familiar with especially if you follow my YouTube channel. I share the many ways I find to harness more productivity and generally things that help me improve.
After all, if you’re chasing something specific, you should be improving as you move towards it. You achieve a goal by becoming the kind of person who is capable of achieving that goal. You don’t attract it to you, you rise to it’s level. As I grow and learn, I pass those on to those around me so hopefully it can help them too.
Focus and overcoming distractions are definitely a part of that process, but to me, living The Undistracted Life is a bit more. It’s about staying on the path and continuing to strive and learn when we happen to get pulled aside.
Third of all, and perhaps most practically, The Undistracted Life for me means finding ways to distance myself from the mayhem that regularly bombards us. This often means finding ways to cut back on my use of technology and how much I rely on it. Hence, my pocket notebook. If you want one they are available here. They are my absolute favorite and I made some additions so they are even better. Right now if you buy 2 I’ll throw an extra one in for free.
Along with that, a big piece of this for me is slowing down. Too often I feel like I’m a hampster running my tiny legs off and I’m just plain tired. In this case, living “Undistracted” is very literal. I think we often feel unhappy and frantic because we are being pulled in so many different directions. It’s time to slow down.
Here again, there’s no one size fits all. You’ll hear what I mean by “slowing down” I’m sure, but it’s on a spectrum and it’s different for different people. It also depends largely on the phase of life that person is in. But I think it’s important to talk about, so head-first I will dive.
The pursuit of The Undistracted Life falls into the category of an infinite game. It’s not one where you arrive, it’s a way of living that changes and morphs with time and experience. I’m exploring what that looks like for me right now and hopefully, it can be helpful to you as well.
If slowing down sounds nice, here are my 5 preferred ways of doing it.
As a Wicked Kid, I like that this is your version of Fiyero living an "unexamined life". Before he began adapt & change & grow.
For me, intention & doing things on purpose is Everything. And, big effort means that big rest is also necessary (something I get better at as I go).
Thanks for showing up & holding space as you do
I love this. I saw your note about quiet mornings so I wanted to check out your publication. Simplifying and cutting out distractions can be brutal, but when you find peace from them, it’s huge.
For instance, I struggle with tech. I’m constantly reaching for my phone. The only time that I don’t is when I am doing something intentionally, like reading or writing. I’m trying to find other times in my day to be okay just being, and not reaching for my phone for mindless distraction.
Good post.
